Army of One

The king is not saved by a mighty army; a warrior is not delivered by great strength.  A horse is a false hope for victory; Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength.  Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His lovingkindness, To deliver their soul from death And to keep them alive in famine. ” — Psalm 33:16-19 (NASB)

Kings and governments alike amass major armies of troops in order to save themselves from their enemies.  Warriors train for years to become stronger and more equipped to succeed in battle.  Tools like horses or tanks are acquired for a strategic advantage.

Ironically, however, the most important weapon of choice is not any of these–it’s fear.  No level of planning without a fear of the Lord will achieve victory.  No technological advantage will out-do the awesome power of the God in heaven.  There is no troop build-up, regardless of size, that will have better success than the army of One.

What about you?  What do you surround yourself with?  You may not be a king, you may not be a warrior, but you do have something to protect.  Do not lay your hope on the odds of effortless victory, but lay it on His lovingkindness.  Do not look to man to fight the spiritual famine, but look to God.  Fear Him and He will strengthen you.  Fear Him and He will keep His eye on you. Fear Him, and He will deliver your soul from death.  What do you rely on?
