What Are You Waiting For?

"I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning... " (Psalm 130:5-6a ESV).

What are you waiting on?  In what do you hope?  It’s easy for us to get caught up in the politics, drama, and monotony of everyday life to the extent that we count on and rely on it for fulfillment in life.  Are you waiting on that next promotion before your life will be in order?  Will the election of that next superstar candidate finally correct all the wrong in the world today?  Is that new favorite gadget of yours going to allow you to achieve just the next little amount of productivity you need to be successful?

Life is short, complicated, and incredibly unpredictable.  If we put our hope in and long for the things this world has to offer, we will be tremendously disappointed.  This life is not meant to last, nor is it meant to fulfill.  We often deceive ourselves into demanding that this life be exactly the way we want it to be before we can focus on the next.  We promise ourselves that if we can just attain this benchmark or checkpoint that the rest will fall in place.

You see, there is always another promotion, candidate, and gadget.  The next checkpoint always reveals another and just as soon as we have things where we want them, another “need” arises.  Jesus told us that if “we seek first the kingdom of God” that the rest would be taken care of.  But don’t misunderstand, we aren’t to seek the kingdom as a means to achieve those worldly ends.

Are you putting your hope in God or the things of this world?  The psalmist waited for the LORD more than watchmen for the morning, because God today is far better than anything tomorrow might bring.    What are you waiting for?
