Habakkuk (he that embraces; a wrestler) was a Jew who lived 600 years before Jesus Christ.

Babylon was the powerful empire of the era and a growing threat to Habakkuk’s people (1:6b-11).

The LORD uses Habakkuk as a prophet (2:2-3); his message is an “oracle” (1:1, literally, a burden).
