Why was Mary in the upper room?

Luke authors both the gospel by his name and the book of Acts.  The gospel of Luke covers the life of Jesus from conception to resurrection.  Acts covers the establishment and history of the church after the resurrection.  Thus, the first chapter of Acts ties together the events occurring between Jesus’ resurrection and Pentecost.  Acts 1 informs us of Jesus’ ascension and those gathered together waiting for His promise.  Mary the mother of Jesus is listed among those waiting in the upper room.  So, let’s ask…why was Mary in the upper room?
